The 96th Academy Awards took place on 10 March 2024 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
The 96th Academy Awards ceremony celebrates the film industry of the past year, with awards given for artistic and technical achievements. The three hour live ceremony also included live performances of the Original Song nominees with many Kens, including Ryan Gosling, on-stage to perform “I’m Just Ken from Barbie (2023).
The year also saw the return of a tradition where previous winners of the Academy Awards are those awarding the nominees, with presenters including Liza Minnelli, Jamie Lee Curtis, Steven Spielberg, Matthew McConaughey, Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences also recently announced that films made in 2025 will begin qualifying for the new category for Casting Directors, which will be awarded from 2026.
The main winners of the night were Oppenheimer and Poor Things following speculation of Oppenheimer’s success for Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy.
Oppenheimer won seven statuettes – including Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Director and Best Film – whilst Poor Things won Emma Stone her second award for Best Actress in a Leading Role after La La Land (2016), as well as awards for Costume Design and Makeup and Hairstyling.
